Ok, so our little girl had some money from her birthday. "Well," I thought to myself, "let's take this money down to the Lego store at the local mall and let her pick out something she'll like!" The fact that I (a grown man in his 30s) happen to have a somewhat unhealthy propensity for spending too much money on Legos for myself had nothing to do with this decision. Honest.Anyway, so we get there and I tell her that we'll have a look at everything and at the end she can pick whatever she wants, up to and including a total price of $25 (how much money she had). She sees this Lego Friends advent calendar halfway through and is looking at it when one of the store employees stops by and says something like "Oh hey, yeah you should get one of those if you like it, cuz we're only getting a very limited shipment and once they're gone they're gone." Meanwhile our little Lego-obsessionist-in-training is going crazy over how awesome the pictures are. I ask the employee what's inside and we both figured it was like other advent calendars and the pictures we saw were a good indication of what's inside.So she really wanted it, and even though it was more expensive than her budget (it was $35), I caved and bought it for her, thinking that it's worth it for her enjoyment. So we get home and I explain how advent calendars work and even though it's not even October we decide that she'll get a new Lego every day for the next 24 days. First day she gets one of the mini dolls and loves it.Then the next day hit. It was just a jumble of blocks and we had no idea what it was supposed to be. Well, so as not to ruin her surprise I take the box in the other room and completely dismantle it, looking for instructions. No instructions. And some of the daily sets are really not at all intuitive, nor very exciting. We wound up having to search the internet for pictures on how to put a bunch of this stuff together.Seriously? We spent nearly $40 for two minidolls, a dog and a bunch of random presents (made by slapping together a couple of bricks)? I know Legos have gotten crazy expensive, but this is ridiculous. And really, only TWO minidolls? Those are the best pieces, and she's only getting two. We were all expecting a half a dozen at least. And a horse. Because, oh I dunno . . . there's a frickin' horse on the cover and a bunch of people and zero indication that you're getting two minidolls and a bunch of random bricks that won't even fill a sandwich bag halfway! Also, more than once we've opened the flap for the day, pulled out a little bundle of bricks and looked at it going "whuh? is that a . . . wait is it supposed to . . ?" and really being totally underwhelmed and confused.Fun: 2/5. She likes it, but only because she doesn't yet know the crushing despair of realizing her dreams of ponies and little plastic friends frolicking together in her constructed dioramas is going to be dashed to nothing in the coming days.Educational Value: 1/5. I dunno, maybe I should give this more stars since Lego totally schooled me by suckering me into paying this much money for something that's totally not worth it.Durability: 4/5. They're Legos. She couldn't break the individual pieces if she tried. She can tear the constructed models to pieces, but hey, that's why we buy this stuff, right?Overall: 1/5. It's a disappointment. Plain and simple. It's overpriced: the value is disproportionately small compared to what you're gonna spend on it (especially if you get it from eBay or some other third-party hawker). A couple of the dailies are neat: both minidolls are favorites, and she liked the skis and the puppy, but everything else is mostly just confusing and uninspired.Ugh. So I guess I have a couple weeks to figure out what to do about the extreme inability of this product to meet our little girl's expectations, but seriously, what the hey-o, Lego? This thing shouldn't have cost more than $20.
